Dutasteride and finasteride are not the same sentence
Finasteride 1 mg, on the Propecia label, is for male pattern hair loss in men only, one tablet a day. Dutasteride is a different 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. The hair label we opened mentions it in a high-grade prostate-cancer warning, not as a hair dose we can copy.
What we opened, and the hole we will not fill
Position 1 on 2026-10-16 is a PubMed Central paper. We did not open it. A UK pharmacy in that result sells a winner line. We do not.
| From the Propecia label | |
|---|---|
| Finasteride hair dose | 1 mg once daily, with or without meals. Men only. Generally three months or more before benefit. Effect reverses within 12 months after stopping. |
| Sexual reactions, year 1 | Decreased libido 1.8%, erectile dysfunction 1.3%, ejaculation disorder 1.2%. Placebo was lower. Details are on the side-effects page. |
| Dutasteride on that same label | A 4-year trial of dutasteride (Avodart) saw high-grade prostate cancer in 1% versus 0.5% on placebo. That is a cancer warning, not a hair recipe. |
If a clinician prescribes dutasteride for hair, that is their prescription, not a dose this page invented. The existing dutasteride page is dutasteride for hair loss.
