No morning wood: what it can mean and when to get checked

No morning wood now and then is normal. Morning erections happen during REM sleep, so poor sleep, alcohol, stress or waking at a different point in the sleep cycle can make them disappear. If they stop for weeks and you also have trouble with erections during sex, a physical cause is worth checking.

What morning wood is

Morning wood is an erection you wake up with. It comes from erections that happen naturally several times a night during REM sleep.

The medical term is nocturnal penile tumescence. It is a reflex, and it shows the blood vessels and nerves can work. It is tied to REM sleep rather than only to dreams, and how often you notice it changes with age.

Is it normal to have no morning wood?

Yes, sometimes. Missing it for a few days or weeks is common and usually not a sign of anything serious.

You may have had one and woken after it faded, and age reduces how often you notice it. One missing week is not ED. "Persistent" means weeks to months, plus other symptoms.

Everyday reasons it disappears

Short sleep, broken sleep, alcohol, stress and some medications are the most common everyday reasons.

Sleep apnea is worth asking about if you snore or wake tired. Drinking the night before can do it; see ED and alcohol. Stress and depression play a part, and so do medications such as some antidepressants.

When no morning wood points to a physical cause

If morning erections stop and erections during sex are also weaker, blood flow, hormones or nerves may be involved. That combination is worth a clinical review.

Low testosterone often comes with low desire and fatigue, and a blood test confirms it. Blood vessel health and diabetes matter too; see ED and diabetes. New ED can be an early heart warning. This is not a self-diagnosis; read erectile dysfunction causes and treatment.

Morning wood but trouble with a partner

If morning erections are normal but erections with a partner are not, anxiety or pressure may be part of the picture. It is a clue, not a diagnosis.

Physical and psychological causes often overlap; see performance anxiety and ED. Medication can still help some men in this case, and the clinician decides. Talking to a therapist is a real option.

Getting it checked online with Mendoxa

A licensed clinician can review your symptoms through an online intake. Mendoxa serves 49 states (not California), and clinicians in the LocumTele network review every case.

The intake asks about your symptoms, sleep, medications and health history. A prescription is never automatic, and the clinician may refer you for blood work or in-person care. When prescribed, Rush Pharmacy prepares and ships.

No study opened that equates this with ED

We did not open a trial that says missing morning erections equals erectile dysfunction. Do not treat this page as that proof. A visit can still be the right next step.
